The German Iris ‘Clarence’, Iris germanica, is cool and blue, and this Iris is calming and quiet in the romantic garden. Also known as “Bearded Iris”, it is outstanding for its unusual color, design, and sturdy, vigorous growth habit.

‘Clarence’ is a hardy, disease and drought-resistant plant. Long blooming in late spring and early summer, with handsome green sword-like foliage, Clarence enjoys full or part sun and well-drained soil. Plant near pools, ponds and other water-heavy areas.

These Iris are easy to grow and thrive in moist, well-draining soil. They bloom in mid spring for a 2 – 3 week period. Plant bearded Iris bulbs in 10 to 14 day intervals to enjoy a continuous supply of cut flowers. For a more striking effect, plant the bulbs in groups of 20 or more

In cold areas the Iris should be mulched in winter to protect from frost. ‘Clarence’ Iris are great for borders, containers, naturalizing, and cut flowers. They are deer, rabbit and squirrel resistant.

Information About Bare Root Iris

Bare root Iris are shipped as nice fresh cut divisions with two to three fans of green tops. Keep in mind each Iris variety can have slightly different sized roots.

When planting, make sure 1/3rd of the rhizome is exposed to sunlight with the roots buried underneath. Note, it’s best to cover the rhizome with a thin layer of mulch or leaves to protect it during the coldest months but make sure to uncover in the spring.
